Austin is the capital of the Texas. Located in Central Texas Austin is the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 15th-largest in the US. In 2009 the estimated population of Austin was 757,688.
Austin was orginally settled in the 1830s on the banks of the Colorado River by pioneers who named the village Waterloo. In 1839, Austin, then called Waterloo, was chosen as the capital of the Republic of Texas. The city was renamed after Stephen F. Austin. Residents of Austin are known as "Austinites"
